When I opened my first box of
pastels nearly twenty years ago, the intense colors knocked me back. It was so much
better than getting your new box of crayons at the beginning of the school
year. I love pastels. Everyday when I walk into my studio and see my work
table
filled with color I am inspired. I love holding the pastel, being messy, and
wearing the colors on my fingers and smock. I love that I can take fifteen
minutes at the easel and create something immediately or disappear into my work
for hours and never get distracted by boredom. You must try them sometime. I paint what captures my
attention. It is always a surprise as to what knocks on the door of my
conscience and demands to be let in. This is why I keep my eyes open wide and my
sketchbook and camera within reach.
